In the first significant staff shakeup since President Trump returned to office in January, National Security Adviser Waltz is expected to depart in the coming days, CNN reported earlier today. The decision follows a period of uncertainty over Waltz’s role, which sources say came to a head earlier this week when it became clear his time leading the National Security Council (NSC) had come to an end.
Waltz's influence in the West Wing had waned significantly, particularly after a major misstep where he inadvertently added a journalist to a secure group chat discussing highly sensitive military operations in Yemen. The blunder severely undermined his standing within the administration.
Multiple sources indicate that Alex Wong, the deputy national security adviser, along with several other NSC officials, are also expected to exit, although the timeline remains uncertain.
The administration is reportedly considering Secretary of State Marco Rubio to fill the upcoming vacancy, a move that would echo historical precedent. Henry Kissinger famously held both roles — secretary of State and national security adviser — under President Richard Nixon.
This wouldn’t be the first time Rubio has been rapidly tapped to fill a key position in the Trump administration. In February, President Trump dismissed National Archivist Colleen Shogan and appointed Rubio as her replacement. That same month, Rubio was also named acting administrator for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), an agency the administration has since targeted for shutdown as part of broader cost-cutting efforts.
Rubio’s potential dual role signals a consolidation of influence and continued trust from the president, as he continues his strong leadership at the State Department.
