Saudi Arabia Sets Red Line for Trump Visit: No Talk of Israel Normalisation

Riyadh, May 2, 2025

— As preparations continue for former U.S. President Donald Trump’s scheduled visit to Saudi Arabia this May, officials in the Kingdom have reportedly drawn a firm diplomatic boundary: discussions about normalisation with Israel are strictly off the agenda.

Saudi authorities, according to sources familiar with the planning, have made it clear to Trump’s team that the topic of establishing formal ties with Israel will not be entertained during the upcoming visit. The decision reflects the Kingdom’s cautious approach to regional diplomacy amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, particularly concerning the situation in Gaza and the broader Palestinian issue.

Trump, known for brokering several normalisation agreements between Israel and Arab nations under the 2020 Abraham Accords during his presidency, has previously expressed interest in expanding such deals. However, Saudi Arabia appears resolute in maintaining its current stance, emphasizing that Palestinian statehood remains a prerequisite for any potential recognition of Israel.

The visit is expected to focus instead on economic cooperation, regional security, and shared strategic interests.

This development highlights the ongoing complexities in Middle East diplomacy and the shifting dynamics as key players reassess their positions in light of evolving regional challenges.
